The Septic “No-Fly” List: 7 Things Never to Flush
Your septic tank is a living ecosystem powered by bacteria that break down waste. When you treat your toilet like a trash can, you disrupt that biology and invite a massive clog. If you want to extend the time between pumpings, keep these seven items far away from your pipes.
1. “Flushable” Wipes
Here’s the cold, hard truth: Flushable wipes are not flushable. Unlike toilet paper, which dissolves in seconds, these wipes stay intact for months. They get caught on the baffles of your tank and create “clumps” that lead to immediate backups.
2. Grease, Fats, and Oils
Pouring bacon grease down the drain is a death sentence for your drain field. Once it cools, it hardens into a waterproof “cap” over the soil, preventing water from draining away.
3. Chemical Drain Cleaners
Those harsh, bubbling liquids might clear a hair clog, but they also kill the “good” bacteria in your septic tank. Without those bacteria, solids won’t break down, and your tank will fill up much faster.
4. Other Common Offenders:
- Feminine hygiene products: They are designed to absorb liquid, not dissolve.
- Coffee grounds: They don’t break down and add significant sludge to the bottom of the tank.
- Dental floss: It’s essentially a tiny plastic net that tangles around your pump or sensors.
- Cat litter: Even the “biodegradable” kind is far too heavy for a septic system.
The Golden Rule: If it didn’t come out of your body and it isn’t plain toilet paper, it doesn’t belong in the septic system.
